I’m a fan of UBI too — but whenever I think about it — it’s always attached to work because there’s a need for work that currently is not paid for but is extremely necessary as we move into the next economy. That work is whole person human development (www.integrativeeconomy.com) and could be created through local cooperatives integrated with local businesses to strengthen the local community. It would take too long to write it all out here — but on the website above there’s a ppt. discussing our changing economy, showing that in the future only about 30% of people will be employed in high skill/high wages jobs, leaving 70% to struggle (and this is where UBI comes in to create some balance). But many of these 70% could be employed as ‘human capacity development professionals’ working out of their homes dealing with children, children and adults with disabilities and seniors who need care in their homes too. It would also redirect so much of the funding we currently spend in social services for a ‘fix it after it’s broke’ system that produces such poor results.
